BILL WELD AND THE FUTURE OF THE GOP: NATIONAL

As the 2020 elections approach, more candidates enter the race. Mostly Democrats, but there are others who defy expectations. One of them, a man that is seemingly getting a lot of press, is Bill Weld. He is an experienced lawyer and former governor of Massachusetts.       The only trouble is, the man is facing Goliath. Donald J. Trump owns the Republican Party at the moment, he is truly an elephant. Big, sluggish and too powerful. Bill Weld however is a man slightly younger than Trump and a man with more street smarts than him. He is also much more in touch with the core of the Republican Party.        I swing to the left when it comes to political affiliation but I must admire Weld's determination. In recent interview with Politico, Weld was optimistic about his far-fetched bid for the oval office. He seems calm, cool and collected, whilst Trump at times is angry and ignorant.         Weld is pro Gay Marriage and a moderate when it comes to gun control. In some ways he is the liberal's Conservative. After all, he was not always this way. In 2016 he was Gary Johnson(a libertarian candidate)'s. He is a very strong Libertarian Conservative coming from a different angle than Trump. The ideas that Weld has are fresh, but not new,          Weld's most famous quote is: "I wish to return the Republican Party to the party of Lincoln." This could mean he wants to be more progressive or he could be recapturing the Conservative spree felt in the latter half of the 1960s. Weld at times reminds one of LBJ being a libertarian or the Conservative verve and Firepower of Ronald Reagan.           It remains to be seen whether Weld will split the Democratic vote, or recapture the Republican one. Whatever his choices may be, I wish him the best of luck.
